Abattoir Land Application System

Waste Management System for Meat Industy Client

This abattoir is situated next to a rendering plant on adjacent sites in North Devon. The biological effluent treatment plant owned by the renderer, processes effluent generated at both sites. The final effluent is spray irrigated on land owned by the abattoir. A Waste Management Licence was required for land application as the rate of waste applied to land exceeded the limits for agricultural benefit. The treatment plant also required a Waste Management Licence as it imports effluent from a third party.

EBL was commissioned to independently evaluate the current status of the effluent treatment plant and make proposals leading to the improvement of final effluent quality to ensure compliance with consent limits set by the Environment Agency (EA). EBL undertook a Waste Audit of both sites assessing the day to day plant performace and the environmental impact of effluent and solid wastes applied to land. The audit resulted in recommend-ations to improve overall plant performance and land application procedures. All necessary waste management licences were successfully finalised.
