Environmental Aid Project in China

Jiangsu Environmental Technical Support Project

The Jiangsu Environmental Technical Support Project (JETS) was £2.4m programme aimed at reducing the environmental impact of small and medium sized industrial enterprises in Jiangsu Province, China. The Project is co-funded by the Chinese State Science and Technology Commission (SSTC), and the UK Department for International Development (DFID).

The Project was managed by the IEDC (International Environmental Development Centre, Nanjing) and a consortium of UK companies led by the Babtie Group. Other participating UK companies include Environmental Biotechnology Limited (EBL), WEDC, Hunting Technical Services and McLellan & Partners.

This three year project commenced in October 1995 and will be completed in Spring 1999. The overall objective is to effect a 10% reduction in environmental impact in this sector by 2001. Efforts to achieve this include waste minimisation programmes, training of company staff and environmental protection officials, demonstration of new and low cost technologies and practices, Business Clubs and Pilot Projects. EBLs input included project management, industrial effluent treatment and biotechnology.
