This designwas chosen because of its ability to handle a particularly difficult waste stream with wide variations in organic load and flow rate. The process included anaerobic treatment incorporating a 300m3 digester, followed by an aerobic polishing stage. The exhaust stream from the aerobic reactor was fitted with a deodorising biofilter to ensure odour free operation. Excess biogas was vented through Purator's own stainless steel flarestack system. The waste treatment plant was designed to produce a soluble effluent COD of no greater than 4,000 mg/l, a reduction of greater than 96% from the 96,000 mg/l COD factory waste stream.
